On the afternoon of September 26, the board chairman of Beijing City University and former Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate of the PRC, Mr. Jia Chunwang met with Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, the founder of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) and British parliamentarian.
Firstly, Chairman Jia spoke highly of Lord Bhattacharyya for his great efforts to promote the exchange of technology and education between the UK and China, especially for his contribution to the cooperation between the University of Warwick and Beijing City University. Chairman Jia also congratulated Lord Bhattacharyya on receiving Beijing Great-Wall Friendship Award and Chinese Government Friendship Award.
Chairman Jia pointed out that the University of Warwick is a well-known world-class university with rich and successful experience at developing first-class university; and Beijing City University is an innovative university with vitality and great potential, having cultivated a number of excellent graduates.
Since the strategic partnership in 2012, the two universities have made several achievements in areas, such as post-graduation education and the research and development of advanced manufacturing technology, supported and recognized by the Chinese government.
Chairman Jia hopes that the two universities will deepen the partnership, develop cooperative programs and make more achievements, which can bring mutual benefits, do good for youth in both countries and strengthen the friendship between the UK and China.
Lord Bhattacharyya extended his thankfulness for the special meeting with Chairman Jia. He reviewed the history of the cooperation between WMG and Chinese universities and believed that the cooperation with BCU is the most successful and worthy of expectation.
He noted that he chose BCU instead of many other famous Chinese universities, because he was impressed by BCU’s vitality and ideas. Based on his experience of establishing WMG, he is confident about the bright future of BCU.
He said the cooperation of engineering education and research on technologies, such as car manufacturing and 3D printing, would be further developed. Both sides will strive to make the cooperative program as a good example in the field. The Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Beijing City University Liu Lin, and relevant university and department leaders attended this meeting.
Follow-up: On the morning of September 29, Mayor of Beijing Chen Jining presented the Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award to Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya; in the afternoon, Vice Premier Ma Kai presented the Chinese Government Friendship Award to him. This award is the ultimate accolade to foreigners conferred by Chinese government. Through the recommendation of BCU and evaluation, Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, as the expert in our university, is honored with the award. On the afternoon of September 30, Premier Li Keqiang met Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya and other foreign experts at the Great Hall of People. In the evening, Lord Bhattacharyya was invited to the National Day Banquet.
During his visit in Beijing, Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya attended the Opening Ceremony of 2017 academic year and delivered a speech which encouraged students. Also, Lord Bhattacharyya met with the President of Chinese Academy of Engineering Zhou Ji and the CEO of Zhongguancun Development Group Xuan Hong, visited ZPark and Beijing Automotive Group, and had discussion about the cooperation among the University of Warwick, BCU and these institutes.
